Vera Mirtseva.
A criminal case.
A play in four acts by prominent Russian playwright Lev Urvantsoz, brought into focus by Madame, was a widely performed, internationally successful theatrical thriller of the 1910s and 1920s. First staged in Russia in 1915, during the First World War (1914 – 1918), the play continued to find audiences through periods of extraordinary political and social upheavel. It travelled across countries, languages and borders against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution (1917), the execution of the Imperial Romanov family (1918), the Russian Civil War (1918 – 1922), the formation of the Soviet Union (1922) and the redrawing of Europe’s political boundaries.
A bilingual edition pairs the original Russian pre-reform transcription with an English translation, credited to N. J. Hoffman.
